Don’t Fear Change, Embrace It – Letter From The Editor

“I firmly believe you have a handful of opportunities to make something of yourself in life, and when they come – you better take them and run.”

It’s been a while since I wrote to you guys, so I felt the need to get back to it.

It’s been an absolutely insane first month of 2013 for us at CAVE. We’ve conducted some of our biggest interviews, set records for views, and met some amazing people along the way.

However, that’s not what I’m writing to you about.

Today, my long-time friend/roommate will be moving from Toronto to Australia to start a new and exciting opportunity with his company. To call this the “opportunity of a lifetime” would be under-playing the venture.

At the age of 23, he’s leaving family and friends to take a very real shot at “making it” in this world.

We can all learn from this.

It’s so easy to get caught in a bubble.  Maybe this bubble is your workplace, your favorite restaurant, your hometown, or your apartment.  Wherever it is, sometimes changing things isn’t such a bad idea.

Three years ago, I was living in Vancouver. I had no real stress, and a great support network around me.

But, I was living in a bubble.  I needed a change.

I moved to Toronto, where I had no social network or clue of what I was doing. I’ve said this numerous times, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

I was nervous about the change (as I’m sure my friend is about Australia), but there is something special about taking chances in life. I firmly believe you have a handful of opportunities to make something of yourself in life, and when they come – you better take them and run.

People fear these opportunities. Naturally, there’s an element of uncertainty accompanying any chance you take in life.

However, there’s one certainty people often overlook: you can always come back to where you are now.

If you like a certain type of sandwich at Subway – change it up next time. You can always go back to your usual order.

Something this simple can change your entire outlook on life. You haven’t experienced everything, so you don’t necessarily know what you love or hate. Change it up from time to time.

It’s just too easy to live a life society has prescribed to you. You know - go to school, get a job, get married, get a house, go on three weeks’ vacation per year, and call it a life.

Instead, take some chances. Pursue your passions. If it falls through – you can always go back to the life society has prescribed for you.

All the best down-under Seb. I’ll keep some cold beers in the fridge for when you get back.

Cheers,

Jordan
